Original Story (08/18/22): In celebration of the 40th anniversary of Air Force 1, Nike released special colorways that celebrate specific locations, such as the “Little Accra” AF-1 in the Bronx neighborhood of Ghana and the “LA Flea” at the Los Angeles flea market. Since the AF-1 is loved around the world, Nike has also created special overseas colorways, including this “izakaya” Air Force 1 Mid.

Izakaya is a Japanese word made up of three kanji meaning “stay-drink-place”. An izakaya is a Japanese version of a bar, a casual place where adults can enjoy good wine and food.

The “Izakaya” Air Force 1 Mid’s color scheme is inspired by a typical izakaya, with ivory canvas at the bottom of the upper and beige leather overlays representing wooden furniture. The red star on the left heel is reminiscent of the Sapporo logo, a nod to the Japanese beer brands commonly found in izakayas. Meanwhile, the right heel is stamped with the Shigakari Ware motif. Shigakari Ware is traditional Japanese raccoon dog (tanuki) pottery that is often placed in businesses to attract prosperity. In addition to the theme, there is a receipt on the tongue, similar to the bill received after a long night at the bar. However, the receipt is printed with a timeline of Air Force 1’s history, not a list of all the drinks consumed.

Update (08/25/22):The Air Force 1 Mid “Izakaya” will be available on September 7 at SNKRS and select retailers in the United States.
